What Our Guests Say About Us.

What else is there to say about a month in Piegaro except it was difficult to leave and our children wanted to live there forever! We made it back home without issue and are still missing Piegaro. You have created an amazing environment and we are very thankful to have found you and your lovely Antica Vetereria!  We had an absolutely memorable time in the connecting apartments il Nildo and La Terrazza via the ancient tower stairway. Sophia and William both said it was the best thing they ever did in their 11 and 9 years respectively. We are hoping to come back in 2012! (P.S. Marina spread the word around her children's school and Palo Alto and seven different families came for visits over the years. Her sister, Diana, returned for her honeymoon this summer in La Cantina.  We donated a week for the school fundraising auction as a thank you! Colleen)

What a outstanding time we had with you and we'll cherish it all our lives. We think of all the lovely experiences we had, starting with the tour of the olive grove, vineyard and wine tasting. You might recall that both Regine and we ordered a case apiece, and are parceling out the bottles very carefully. That I was ill for some days, and that you very kindly summoned a fine doctor whose prescriptions definitely put me on the road to recovery, enabled me to read six wonderful books, so I did not feel deprived of travel. Indeed, our memories are wonderful.

If we didn't tell you this last summer, our time in Piegaro was the best vacation we ever had. So many wonderful memories of exploring the region and poking around your village which, by the way, made us feel very welcome. So nice to stroll across the street to the cafe to have morning coffee and around the corner to one of the best Italian meals in a restaurant!  What a pleasure it was. We hope to return someday.

I found L'Antica Vetreria after searching online for the perfect place for me (a travel agent), my brother and his 18 year old son, and my friend (another travel agent). Even though we had a car, we wanted a place that would be in a village so we wouldn't have to get in the car every time we needed some bread (or wine!). This place was perfect! We stayed in La Terrazza with two bedrooms and two baths, and it has a kitchen stocked with all of your cooking needs. We also cooked outside one night. The pool looked wonderful but our one free day it rained so we didn't get a chance to try it. Tom and Colleen were very helpful with suggestions on restaurants and day trips, and we went to a "green" winery that is the only one like it in the world. I highly recommend l"Antica Vetreria and hope to go back very soon! (P.S. Kay returned and has referred three groups who also visit us! Colleen)

A friend and I were travelling throughout Europe this summer and our last week was booked at L'antica Vetreria in Piegaro. We fell in love with L'Antica and the lovely, quiet village. It was the perfect place to spend our last week relaxing and enjoying this beautiful area of Umbria and Tuscany. The owner, Colleen, gave us tours to nearby villages and places of interest that we would never have gone on our own. We also visited some of the more well known tourist towns but the charm was in the places not well known to the tourists. Her knowledge of the area, the culture, people and history made our stay very special. Our room was completely furnished so we shopped at the local stores and cooked several meals in but also favored the local eating establishments that had fantastic food. You must try the Pizza Colleen at Juni's restaurant...I'm sure I'll never have one as good until I can return there. We had a beautiful view from our apartment il Nido of the and valley below and the village square is just a few steps from the entrance. Colleen gave pasta making classes one day to guests which was great fun and the glass factory offered etching classes and we each brought home a treasured piece.. I can't wait to go back. It's not just a place to stay, but Colleen has endeared herself to the local people and because of that, they make you feel welcome and embrace you as part of the village. A great stay, don't miss it.

Piegaro is a nice quiet village with a friendly butcher, baker, grocery store, three bars, a restaurant and a gelateria. All you need. There is also a very interesting glass museum. The town is within easy day trips of all of Tuscany including Sienna. By easy I mean less than 90 minutes. Perugia and Assisi are about 45 minutes by car, and there are plenty of other interesting towns and villages close by. The view from Antica Vetraria's poolside terrace is nice and the terrace is a great place for an evening meal of local wine, cheeses, ham and salami. While we did not cook any meals during our stay, the kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans etc. The staff speaks English. (P.S. Thanks Bradly and Bella for the many guests that have visited us with your referrals. Colleen)

We stayed at L’antica Vetria for one week in early spring. Colleen the owner was an excellent host, full of information about the area and very helpful. The little town that they are located (Piegaro) in is very nice and the people there are very friendly, tho may not speak much English so bring along a phrase book! Within a 1 minute walk is the little café (open good hours) a bank with ATM, a butcher, grocery story, glass museum restaurant. Within a 3 minute walk is a little store that sells everything you may have forgotten (tutti por la casa) And the local bakery post office are maybe a 10 minute walk at best. There is another store in that direction too about 5 minute walk at most just past the main parking where the Wednesday market is. We were two couples and had booked La Terrazza, but Colleen bumped us up to the AWESOME 5 bedroom Villa. Let me tell you that the Villa is spacious. It has 5 bedrooms each with their own full bathroom, it has a full kitchen, livingroom and fireplace and huge table on the mainfloor, along with 2 bedrooms. On one side you go up stairs to see 2 more bedrooms. On the other side you go half way up the stairs to a bedroom in the tower (with its own fireplace), and then at the top of the stairs you have another living room with TV and fireplace. There is a pool outside and each unit has their area with chairs and BBQ. As the weather was cool in very early spring, Colleen was able to order us some wood for the fireplace and we had a fire in the upstairs part of the villa 4 nights in a row to warm up after busy days of site seeing. This place would be perfect for 3 to 5 couples easily. Colleen gave us a tour of the whole facility and all the rooms look awesome and would be great to stay in. This is a wonderful place to stay and a great location for visiting Tuscany and Umbria, We will definitely return here someday soon I hope!

We had a wonderful time last May at L'Antica Vetraria. It is a beautiful property, owned and run by Tom and Colleen from Seattle. The best of an Italian experience with American service! It served as our hub from which we did day trips to the surrounding hill towns in Umbria and Tuscany. Tom and Colleen have managed to preserve the most wonderful historical elements of this ancient glass factory while providing modern facility with all conveniences. We stayed in the "IL Forno" apartment (2 couples) and had more than ample room. The view is spectacular from the apartment and the wonderful terrace. Would highly recommend L'Antica Vetraria" to anyone who wants to come back after a busy day of sightseeing to a peaceful, beautiful setting with all the conveniences of home.

Your hospitality made our 40th anniversary trip a true gift! We loved the villa and vowed we would come back some day. We have sent many other friends to your web site and have told them of the beauty and warmth of the people and Piegaro. (P.S. They certainly referred many friends to visit us over the years! We loved the referrals and are grateful! Colleen)

We wish we could say that we are happy to be home after my wonderful trip in Italy and three weeks in the Villa, but we just can’t. Our family had such an amazing time. We simply can’t wait to return. Our trip was better than we could have ever hoped. Pure paradise. Piegaro is a friendly and inviting town and the Villa was just spectacular. We could not believe the transformation you were able to perform. The villa was completely cozy and “rustic” at the same time. In our three weeks, we toured so many places and experienced most of your suggested day trips. We have already received many requests for information about the place that we stayed from our friends! John's Facebook picture is one of him and all of the boys on the couch in the Villa. I also have to tell you how wonderful Carlotta and her family were to us during our stay when they gave cooking lessons and catered a divine meal in the Villa. My oldest son, Jack, told me that he had a “crush” on Carlotta on our last day. I think he wanted to stay with her! Actually, no one wanted to leave and I am hoping to plan our return trip to Piegaro soon. Thank you again for discovering Piegaro and sharing it with us. (P.S. The Henne family returned two years later and have booked in 2014 for a third return visit. They have referred five groups of friends and family who have also visited L'Antica Vetreria for which are very grateful. Colleen)

So we've been back home again for over a week now. Many things were better in Umbria -- the weather, the pasta, the wine, the landscape and the time our family could spend together. Before we came to L'Antica Vetreria we asked ourselves and wondered how holidays in an old glass factory would be. And we found a little paradise with ancient walls, a real glass oven in the apartment, a nice village with friendly people and everything one needs for nice holidays. The children liked the pool very much and enjoyed our walks to the bakery every morning and we loved the evenings with a glass of wine and looking over the hills. The children loved the pasta lesson you gave Colleen. Thank you very much again for everything. We will return some day!

It's been a year since we've been there, but the sense memories are so vivid...it feels like a week. Colleen and Tom have created a retreat that's elegant and serene. Twenty times a day we'd witness something so simple and beautiful that we'd stop what we were doing and stare: The view of the valley, the clouds, the town, the birds, the 1000 year old interiors. This is the kind of place that when you're telling your friends about it, you'll say: "Go. Trust us. Just go. Stay as long as you can."
Richard Leiter and Pam Nichols, San Rafael, CA

The girls often talk about Piegaro and how they loved it. It was a big favorite. They loved the pool, the relaxed atmosphere and the freedom of Antica Veteria and the town itself. The pasta lessons and the glass fossiling topped it off. Ellen was very excited about the old glass straw she found. (300 years old?) It will be highlight of show and tell when she gets back to school. Andrew and I also loved the beautiful apartment, La Cantina, and the friendliness of other guests there, and the town. We've already recommended it to our friends. Hoping to return one day!  Thanks for the pasta lesson which we all enjoyed and for arranging horse back riding for Sophia.

When we planned our trip to Italy, the stay in Piegaro at L'Antica Vetreria was meant to be just a quiet, lovely time. We were in no  way prepared for the love affair that ensued immediately upon  arrival. We were so taken by the village, our apartment, the people, and the breath-taking views that we began to make plans to return on  our very first day.  Having also visited the touristy places and big  cities, it is the spirit of Piegaro and the charm of L'Antica Vetreria  that has remained at the epitome of our Italian vacation and will be  the top priority for our next visit. (P.S. Kelly and David returned with his parents and stayed in the Villa. We love returning guests! Colleen)

Thanks, Colleen and Tom, for renovating this lovely building in the charming town of Piegaro. It had everything we were looking for - a pool, a beautiful setting in a lovely town (with groceries and restaurants), and lodgings that are luxurious by European standards. Easily accessible from the Autostrada and within 1 to 1 1/2 hours from Orvieto, Siena and Florence, it made a great base for our exploring. I just wish we could have stayed longer! (P.S. Second review from Kay and she has referred several guests to visit us! Colleen)
Kay Gallagher, Westminster, CO

We had a magical week. My five-year-old learned to swim in your pool! We will certainly be back, maybe in the fall next time. We were in town for Corpus Domini and the Roman Festival, and they decorated the streets with flower petals and flower arrangements all around. It was so pretty and will remain a wonderful memory for years! Such a beautiful, clean and welcoming village.  We felt right a home in very little time. Everything so close and children able to play safely.

We had a great time in your il Nido cozy apartmen with a stunning view. Just great. Weather was perfect, and your hosting very nice, and amenities superb. We have recommended it to several folks! (P.S. Yes, we got several referrals and several friends have now visited us. Thanks so much for sharing your joy! Colleen)

We had a unforgetable vacation staying at L'Antica Vetreria. Special thanks to Tom and Colleen for showing us how to live (and drive) like the locals. Here's a link to our blog, to read more about our daily adventures.

Thanks again for the wonderful week we spent in the Villa at Antica Vetreria! We enjoyed our stay (which was definitly too short) and are looking forward to our next holiday in Piegaro. And we wish to express our thanks for the guide through the modern glass factory and the director.
Professor Martin Shermaier, Austria

We spent two weeks at this wonderful little property in this quaint little town. Two friends and I found this place on VRBO and then explored their website and were hooked. We were given tours of all of the units and each has it's own appeal and charm. We happened to arrive during the towns annual Chestnut Festival . . ." more at Trip Advisor. (P.S. Wayne has referred many friends to us which we appreciate! Colleen)

Thank you so much for letting us stay  with you at your so beautiful and remarkable beautifully restored glass factory in August. And letting us prolong our stay with extra 2 days! It was so much more than we had hoped for, espcially with 2 small kids along. Everybody had warned us against a car-holiday with 2 kids that size. Guess they have never been to Piegaro. And we dream about coming back and showing your beautiful hideaway to some of our friends. So therefore we would very much like to request the villa for the last week of August next year. Best regards - and hope to see you next year. (P.S. They did return and even invited us to visit them in Copenhagen! Colleen)
Heidi & Jens, Copenhagen, Denmark

We just wanted to tell you that we really enjoyed our holiday the accomodation is beautiful very comfortable and well equipped. What a vision you had and what an achievement. We would happily recommend the accomodation and would hope to return in the future. You were so very helpful and the people of the village most patient when we tried out our italian! And the butchers fantastic! You never know when using the internet what you will find when you actually arrive but yours was a hidden gem. Many thanks & kind regards.
Karen & Nick Jackson

The Villa was beautiful. You have done a wonderful job of renovating it. It was the most relaxing part of our vacation. The village is wonderful, clean and safe. The children enjoyed the freedom to wander around and played ball with the local kids!  They will remember that for a long time. Thanks for a great visit. (P.S. Many of their friends have arrived for visits!  Thanks for the many referrals. Colleen)

Just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful week we had at La Cantina! The apartment (and the whole building actually) is beautiful! Congratulations on fixing up such a great place - we really enjoyed it!
Barbara DeBoer, The Hague, Netherland

We had a wonderful holiday, and have very happy memories of it - we will be back for sure. Thank you for all you did to make it a very comfortable stay. Just not enough words to say how much we enjoyed the village and felt very welcomed by you and all the shopkeepers, restaurant and cafe owners.  Children loved it and we loved it too because it is such a safe and clean place for them to play and run around.
Michael O'Sullivan, London

We had such a lovely time, and I cannot tell you how much it meant to us to be able to have such a wonderful vacation together. You all made us feel so welcome; you made us feel a part of the family. We came home and GUSHED over every aspect of our trip. Your kindness and hospitality surpassed any expectation I had, and future guests need to know what a wonderful experience they are going to have. (P.S. Betsey has referred many friends to us over the years! Colleen)

L'Antica Vetreria Villa was a fabulous location for our family reunion. It's close to Rome, only an hour and a half north, and close to many charming small villages for day excursions. The beautiful countryside was a breathtaking view from the windows. The kitchen, dining, library and living room provided more room than we thought imaginable. The bedrooms each had their own deluxe bathroom. The Villa provided all the amenities necessary for a relaxing, enjoyable time. We would have liked to stay longer. We will definitely be back! (P.S. Several friends of Carol and Jon's have visited L'Antica Vetreria and in turn referred their friends. Colleen)
Carol & Jon Sinclair, Olympia, Washington

I am amazed by the quality and beauty of your restoration of the Villa. By the quality of the relationships you have developed with the townspeople, and by the partnership you have developed with them. I carry the beauty of the Villa in my mind's eye and in my heart, and the blessing of our visit with you. Not to mention your attention and our time with "the family." Staying at the Villa allowed me and my sisters to enjoy quality and quanity time together. We cannot thank you enough. (P.S. We have enjoyed welcoming several friends of Sharon's over the years. Thanks for all the referrals. Colleen)
Sharon Moe, Seattle, Washington

We loved L'Antica Vetreria and were greeted like old friends rather than paying guests. They have thought of every thing you could need in the lovely apartments, the pool was beautiful and the view is simply breathtaking. Everyone we met in Piegaro was so friendly, we ate at two of the local restaurants and the food was to die for!! We will certainly be going back.
Susie Mansbridge, Great Britain

It's difficult -- no, it's impossible -- to put into words how marvelous an experience we had at L'Antica Vetreria. "Perfect" is a strong word, and one we almost never use, but it most accurately describes our week in Piegaro. We instantly recommended it to a couple who were looking for that special honeymoon place. Happily, they listened to us and were not disappointed. We would highly recommend Colleen and Tom's place (as well as Colleen and Tom themselves) to anyone -- unless, of course, they're not interested in fabulous accommodations in a relaxed, gorgeous setting, with immediate access to great food, great wine, great art, and great companions. (P.S. Murray referred a very famous celebrity to spend her honeymoon in il Nido! Colleen)

A WORD FROM OUR GUESTS

  • I don't know if I am a poetic enough writer to do justice writing about this property. Not only is there beauty to the eye in the unique, historical building, in the gorgeous views, and in the sweet village, there is also beauty for the soul in all of these elements. An experience like this is my favorite way to travel: some days my family took day trips to local sites and played tourist; other days we hung around the village, being a part of everyday community life. For the owners of this property, Colleen and Tom, this endeavor is so much more than a business; it is a passion of the heart that is evident in every detail, large and small. They are completely accessible by email, phone, or in person to share their joy and knowledge of the region, the people, and each and every logistical question you can throw their way. I traveled here with my husband and 6-year-old son, and we all found something to enjoy, and we all wished we could stay much, much longer than we were able. I can't imagine not visiting here again.

  • Wonderful accommodation in a working village with REAL Italians and few tourists. A great place to get the feel of the true Umbria away from the tourist spots. Lovely hill top villages to explore when you have had enough of lazing in/by the pool admiring the gorgeous view. No need to cook either as there are a couple of great places to eat in the village. The meat from the village butcher may just tempt you to barbeque on the terrace though as it is superb quality. Colleen and Tom couldn't be kinder and are always around in an unobtrusive way to help with queries. You won't go wrong staying with them!

  • We have been singing praises to everyone who will listen on this side of the Atlantic about our visit to L’Antica Vetreria.  We had a wonderful time in Piegaro and before we even returned to Fiumicino Airport everyone was saying that that they wanted to come back for another visit.   Our stay with you is going down as one of those fantastic vacations that will survive in family lore for many years...and generations... to come. It is a trip that our three granddaughters will be telling their children.

My wife tells me that whenever she wants to relax, she mentally takes a tour through Piegaro. The butcher, the grocer, Luca’s wonderful meals and pasta sauce, the daily meetings of “the ladies of the Piazza,” Papina's weaving of palm fronds around wine bottles, our stunning tour of the eco-winery Castello Monte Vibiano - followed by lunch at the little family restaurant “down the road” among the farms that we would never have found without Tom’s guidance, Colleen’s fabulous tour of Assisi …and, not to be forgotten, karaoke night in the Piazza. Who knew that a village karaoke night could be so much fun. All of these things stand out in minds, but most of all we remember the warm embrace of the people of Piegaro and warm welcome and assistance that Colleen and Tom gave us throughout our time at the Villa. We all wish that we could hit restart and discover it all over again.
