Umbria is the home of renowned artists and saints. Perugino perhaps embodies both qualities. Born in nearby Citta della Pieve, he painted scenes with his beloved Trasimeno in the background of all his religious masterpieces. Teacher of Raphael, he changed the course of Italian artistic history forever. Rapheal's own "Marriage of the Virgin" can be viewed in Citta della Pieve along with several Perugino's. From art to architecture, Umbria has its treasures, such as the magnificent pink and white Bascilica of St. Clare of Assisi with its flying buttresses that dominate the piazza of the entrance to Assisi. The glittering mosiacs of the facade of the Cathedral of Orvieto were created by glass masters of L'Antica Vetreria, who worked on the mosacis off and on between 1321 and the 16th Century, commuting between Piegaro and Orvieto. The finest ceramics artists are in many towns of Umbria, each with a destinctive style. Deruta's classical with rich colors, Gubbio's moody with deep reds, greens and blues, and Orvieto with its cocky bright palettes. Modern culture is lively all year long with the renowned Umbria Jazz in Perugia that attracts the world's most famous jazz artists for over 40 years, the younger Trasimeno Blues in small towns around Lago Trasimeno including Piegaro, The Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto features music, theatre and dance. Something for all types of music lovers.
